5 rules that stop almost every banking scam

  • Never share OTP, PIN, CVV or password with anyone, including people who say they are from the bank, RBI or police.
  • You never need a PIN to receive money. Entering your UPI PIN always sends money out.
  • Do not install apps from links (.apk files) or screen-sharing apps like AnyDesk at a caller's request.
  • Do not call numbers given in a message. Use the number on your card, passbook or the bank's official website.
  • There is no "digital arrest". Police never demand money on a video call. Hang up and call 1930.

Frequently asked questions

How does the Scam Message Checker work?

It looks for the patterns fraudsters use in India: requests for OTP or PIN, fake KYC and electricity-bill threats, prize and refund offers, part-time job tasks, "digital arrest" threats, app (.apk) downloads, screen-sharing apps and fake links that copy bank names. It checks every link in the message and explains each warning sign in simple words.

Is my message sent anywhere?

No. The check runs entirely inside your browser. The message you paste is not sent to any server or stored. You can even use it with mobile data switched off after the page loads.

It says 'No common scam signs found'. Is the message safe?

Not necessarily. Fraudsters keep changing their wording. Never share an OTP, PIN or password, and verify any request for money or details through your bank's official app, website or branch.

How do I know if a bank website is genuine?

Indian banks have moved their websites to addresses ending in .bank.in, a domain reserved for banks. Even so, type the address yourself or use the official app rather than tapping a link in a message.

I already clicked the link or shared my OTP. What should I do?

Act immediately: call the national cyber crime helpline 1930 or report at cybercrime.gov.in, and call your bank's toll-free number to block your card, UPI and net banking. The faster you report, the better the chance of stopping the money.
