The 5 signs of a scam message

  • Asks for OTP, PIN, CVV or password. No genuine bank or company ever does.
  • A link that is not the official website, often ending in .xyz, .top, .click or an .apk app file.
  • Panic and deadlines: "account blocked today", "disconnected tonight", "arrest".
  • Call or WhatsApp a personal mobile number instead of an official toll-free number.
  • Pay a fee to claim a prize, refund, job or loan.

A free quiz with 10 real-looking SMS and WhatsApp messages. For each one you decide whether it is a scam or safe, and then see the clue that gives it away. It is a quick way to practise spotting the tricks fraudsters use.

Are these real messages?

How do I spot a scam message quickly?

Look for five signs: a request for OTP, PIN or password; a link that is not the official website; panic ("blocked today"); a request to call or WhatsApp a personal mobile number; and any fee to claim a prize, refund or loan.
