More and more people now ask AI chatbots such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Meta AI about money: "Which FD is better?", "How do I read my bank statement?", "Why was this charge debited?" These tools are genuinely useful. But I see a worrying habit: people pasting their full bank statements, account numbers and even OTP messages into them.
As a banker who also uses AI every day, here is a simple guide to what is safe to ask, what you should never share, and how to get help from AI without putting your money at risk.
Why you should be careful
- Your chats may be stored. Many AI services keep conversations, and some use them to improve their systems unless you turn this off. Some chats may be reviewed by people for quality and safety.
- Accounts can be hacked. If someone gets into your email or AI account, they can read your old chats, including anything sensitive you pasted.
- Fake AI apps exist. Fraudsters publish "AI banking assistant", "AI loan" and "AI trading bot" apps that look like popular chatbots but are built to steal your details.
- AI can be wrong. Chatbots can give outdated or incorrect answers about rules, rates and charges, said confidently.

Safe to ask AI ✅
- General money questions: "What is the difference between FD and RD?", "How does EMI work?"
- Explaining terms: "What does NEFT return mean?", "What is a lien on an account?"
- Comparisons and planning: "Should I prepay my home loan or invest?" (then verify with official sources).
- Drafting letters: "Write a polite letter to my bank asking to reverse a charge" (fill in your personal details yourself, offline).
- Understanding a message: "Does this SMS look like a scam?", after removing names and numbers from it.
Never share with AI 🚫
- OTPs, UPI PIN, ATM PIN, CVV, passwords: never, with anyone or anything.
- Full account numbers and card numbers (including expiry dates).
- Aadhaar, PAN, passport numbers and photos of these documents.
- Unedited bank statements, salary slips or loan documents. They contain your name, account number, address, employer and transaction history.
- Net banking user IDs and security answers.
- Screenshots of banking apps that show balances, account numbers or customer IDs.
How to use AI safely for money questions
- Remove personal details first. Before pasting any text, replace names, account numbers and phone numbers with "XXXX". Crop or blur screenshots.
- Ask about the pattern, not your data. Instead of pasting your statement, ask: "My statement shows 'ACH D- XYZ', what does that usually mean?"
- Check your privacy settings. Most chatbots let you turn off chat history or stop your chats from being used to train their models. Look for these options in the app's settings.
- Use only official apps from the Play Store / App Store, published by the real company (OpenAI, Google, Microsoft and so on). Never install chatbot "APK" files from links.
- Verify important answers. For rules, rates and charges, check your bank's website, RBI's website or your branch. AI is a starting point, not the final word.
- Protect your AI account with a strong password and two-step verification, just like your email.
Warning: fake "AI" money schemes
Fraudsters love the word "AI". Be careful of:
- "AI trading bots" that promise guaranteed daily profits. Real investing never guarantees returns.
- "AI customer care" numbers found through search engines or social media. Use only the number on your bank's official website or card.
- Deepfake videos of famous people promoting investment apps.

Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to upload my bank statement to ChatGPT?
It is not a good idea to upload it as it is. A statement contains your name, account number and full transaction history. If you need help understanding it, remove or mask personal details first, or ask about specific entries in general terms.
Can AI chatbots access my bank account?
No. A chatbot cannot see your bank account unless you give it the information. The risk comes from what you type or upload, and from fake apps that pretend to be chatbots.
Will my bank ever ask me to share details through an AI chatbot?
No. Banks never ask for your OTP, PIN or password through any chatbot, call or message. Use only your bank's official app or website for banking.
Are AI answers about bank rules reliable?
Often helpful, but not always correct or up to date. For rules and charges, confirm with your bank or RBI's website. You can also use tools like the Bank Charge Detective, which checks charges against RBI rules.
